The Providence campus is the largest with students coming from all 50 states and 71 countries. JWU is a career-focused university with a focus on business, culinary arts, hospitality, technology and education. The curriculum includes hands-on training, leadership opportunities, and other forms of experiential learning. Students in many of the programs can expect to gain real-life experiences working in several hotels operated by the university. The JWU faculty brings to class lots of industry experience. Academics are supported by a 20 to 1 student / faculty ratio. Johnson Wales is not the best choice for students who are unsure of their career plans, for a defining feature of the university is that students take courses in their majors from day one (at a  liberal arts college, in contrast, students explore a wide range of fiel ds during their first year or two). Campus life at Johnson Wales is active with over 90 clubs and organizations, and the school has numerous fraternities and sororities. On the athletic front, the JWU Wildcats compete in the NCAA Division III Great Northeast Athletic Conference for most sports. The university fields ten mens and seven womens intercollegiate sports.
